Dear CAP-21 Members:
What an eventful year it has been! The decision to transition from the “unofficial” organization we enjoyed as Communities 2000 to a more formal and official form was one we took after much thought and discussion. Our past successes and the clearly stated wishes of you, our members, that the organization continue were the deciding factors for us. As always seems to be the case, anything worthwhile takes time and effort to establish. Our incorporation and achievement of tax exempt status were no exceptions. However, we were successful and we’ve now nearly completed our first full year of operation as CAP 21.
Expressions of thanks are in order. First, our thanks to you, our members for your unflagging support and interest during this transition. Without you, we would have neither the vision nor the means to think regionally and act locally.
Thank you to our dedicated staff. Without them, nothing would be possible. Our thanks go to Lani Ulrich, Mary Ann Nelson and Diane Ponzio for their efforts, experience, advise and counsel. A big thank you as well to Mary Van Slyke, who left our organization this year after seeing us through a time of great change. We would not be where we are without her, and we wish her the best in the future.
And finally, our sincerest thanks to departing board members. Joan Payne joined our board to help us get established and has provided invaluable help this last year. Greg O’Hara, Ray Schoeberlein and Bob Van Slyke have been with us from the very first meetings of Communities 2000. Their advice and support during this year of transition were critical to our success. We sometimes forget how many experienced, valuable and community-minded individuals live in our communities and how many of them are ready and willing to serve.
As this first annual report demonstrates, we’ve had a great first year. Thanks to everyone for making it possible. Please stay involved in our activities and help our region continue to prosper through partnerships.

Dear Members and Partners:
Preparation of this report has provided a time to reflect and appreciate all that has occurred through growing partnerships in our region. We began the year with outreach. We worked with the New York Planning Federation (NYFP) supporting the Webb Master Planning Advisory Committee and the Communities Master Planning Project (CMaPP); participated in the Adirondack Gateway Community Network with the Conservation Fund; coordinated workshops with the Rural Housing Coalition and Trailblazers, Inc. on affordable housing and transportation issues; and hosted workshops on the center of town development and design opportunities now facing Old Forge and other hamlets.
Much was accomplished by a 2, now 3-person, part-time office and by many, many board and committee volunteer hours. New resources were matched with local needs through our first year of college intern support from Colgate University and Paul Smiths College. Results of their efforts surround us in our beautiful office, a space made possible through generous donations.
This year brought milestones in our region’s development; success of the Hemmer architectural heritage preservation effort - a combined partnership of community energy, in-kind donations and private & public funds; completion of the first of three town comprehensive master plans; opening of Byrne Dairy, a new construction standard in commercial architecture design established through dialogue and communication; and the Hanging Flower Basket count broke the 350 mark! Partnerships were formalized with office partners. We share space and resources with FCLPAC and celebrated with CAA as the CAAEDO opened in April.
We ended this phase of growth with recognition and praise from three diverse groups. This fall, the APA, the Southern ADK Library System and Leadership Mohawk Valley all invited us to tell the CAP-21 story, past and present. We had a great deal to share.
In 1998, a leadership trainer told the original Core Team, “Don’t push the rope” and always remember that in community work, “We are building the path as we walk it.” As we look forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead, let’s celebrate the new paths forged these last few years.
