CAP-21 Annual Report 2003

President’s Message

Dear CAP-21 Members:
2003 has been a year of consolidation and maturation for CAP-21. We have continued to grow and change as an organization, with new accomplishments and new challenges. As the attached reports show, our accomplishments have been many and varied. Our successes continue to highlight the value of forging partnerships-partnerships with the local businesses, partnerships with local and county government and partnerships with other civic and volunteer organizations in our communities. CAP-21 provides us with a regional voice on issues that concern us all—issues such as transportation, economic development, and the appearance of our hamlets.
We continue to receive recognition for our efforts-organizations such as the New York Department of State, the Adirondack Park Agency, and communities from the Mohawk Valley to Fulton have asked us to tell our success story and to help other communities begin similar efforts. Our efforts have resulted in several substantial grants to local communities. Our successes here also point out the need to continue to work regionally.
These last few years have brought challenges for most maturing organizations. As it is with any not-for-profit organization, raising the necessary funds to continue our efforts remains an ongoing (but to date very successful) effort. Changes in board membership and staff have also provided challenges as well as opportunities. Demands on our time and resources can sometimes exceed our level of both. Our board and staff will continue to work to insure that we get the most out of our resources.
Once again, I’d like to thank you, our members, for your vision and your support. You got us here and your continued support is greatly appreciated. After all, our vision is you vision.
Thanks again to our staff. Lani Ulrich, Diane Ponzio and MaryAnn Nelson are the small staff that does great things. Diane has left our staff after completing a terrific job organizing our office. We wish her the best and hope she will continue to volunteer when she’s back for the summer.
Thanks to all of our volunteers. Whether you worked in the office, on the flower project, at a presentation, or quietly from your home, your efforts are essential to us.
And finally, thanks to departing board member, Ruth Luczka along with former members Richard Risley, Maureen Kantor, Jack Boylan and the late Christine Snide, all of whom served during 2002-03. Our board represents the region rather than each member’s community. Their experience, counsel and advice is critical to our success.

Don Kelly
President

Director’s Moment

Dear Members and Partners:
Many in our country have faced stressful moments this year and CAP-21 is no exception. Thank you all for your support through our growing pains.
I am reassured each time I remember the basics—facilitate dialogue, open up communication, don’t “push the rope”, LISTEN, and at all times, B+. Only by patiently taking the steps needed to develop sustainable partnerships can we truly prepare for the future, while protecting our communities.
In this last year, much time was devoted to the design and creation of a website; expansion of office resources from 1 to 4 computers and expanded use of technology through Quick Books, Access and Website training. With these resources in place, we established a strong partnership with Niagara Mohawk/National Grid and initiated the Hamlet Revitalization Study in Old Forge.
Externally, this year was highlighted by the adoption of the 2nd Town Comprehensive Master Plan, this time in Inlet. Congratulations to all who worked so diligently. As additional funding becomes available, CAP will proceed with support for completion of other plans and implementation. Toward that end, we welcomed new and returning volunteer grant writers this summer.
Thanks to all the many individuals, businesses, organizations, town and county governments for joining this exciting effort through your financial and in-kind support noted within. You make it possible!
We have succeeded in reaching across barriers created by town and counties lines. As we move forward, let us continue to reach out in our own communities and neighborhoods to tell the story and to listen. It is this partnership which created CAP-21 and will sustain CAP into the future. My thanks to the Board and to the membership for the privilege of serving as Director of this remarkable organization.

Lani Ulrich, Director
