Think
Spring-order Hanging Flower Baskets and Bear Resistant Cans now!

Tired of cleaning up after the bears, raccoons
and others? CAP-21 has begun a fund-raiser which is good for the community
and the environment. These animal resistant cans made of heavy plastic
discourage bears away from human food sources—they can’t
get in and soon stop trying. Forest Green reinforced cans are available
at the CAP-21 office at Hemmer Cottage. Future orders will be available
by pre-sale only.

Hanging Basket Flower Donation form
 One
of the most well known and visible outcomes of C2000, is the Summer
Hanging Flower Basket project. First dismissed at as a waste
of time, it is now seen as a model of regional unity, partnership
and community pride. Seasonal residents comment that once they see
the baskets, they know they’re “home”.
One individual proposed the idea, researched the needed
equipment and inspired the C2000 Architecture and Beautification
Committee with his enthusiasm. Local businesses and individuals donated
the necessary funds, volunteers helped pot the greenhouse flowers,
tanks were purchased by the townships and teams of watering volunteers
were recruited. The result is ….A visible Regional partnership
from Forestport to Raquette Lake.
We could have done this differently…. We could
have hired a greenhouse to pot the plants and hang them and hired
others to water them. But that doesn’t help build community
partnerships!
From 112 baskets to 400
baskets and growing!
Through public/private sponsorship
and many, many volunteer hours, 112 baskets were hung that first summer.
Eight years later this effort has grown into a regional model of cooperation
with 400 baskets gracing our main roadway and the hamlets of Stillwater
and Raquette Lake last summer. Each June, 40-50 volunteers meet to
pot and hang each basket. They are then watered and cared for throughout
the summer by a team of 50 volunteers and a few town employees in
Forestport, Woodgate, Otter Lake, Thendara, Old Forge, Eagle Bay,
Big Moose, Stillwater, Inlet and Raquette Lake.

New Economic Development Office

From the original C2000 Economic Development Focus group,
organized energy for economic development emerged. In April, 2002, The
CAA, Central Adirondack Association and AEDC, the Adirondack Economic
Development Corporation, began a partnership and opened an office in the
CAP-21 suite. For more than 70 years, The CAA has sponsored area events
and provided an insurance umbrella and joint advertising for area businesses,
but no true “Chamber” existed.

Preservation of the Hemmer Cottage
In
2001, a significant building in the center of Old Forge was demolished.
An outcry of objection occurred. Two months later, the town school announced
plans to sell the last remaining Hemmer Cottage, a unique, log sided structure.
If the cottage was sold and moved by a new owner, it would be demolished.
Members of the C2000 Architecture committee decided enough was enough,
and a Hemmer Cottage Preservation Committee was started. As this small
group publicized the imminent demolition, a public/private partnership
grew which worked together to successfully save the building.
Because of this generous support, the cottage was successfully moved on
May 31, 2002 to a new waterfront home. The Webb Historical Association
took a major step by creating an Architectural Preservation Committee
and adopting Historic Hemmer Cottage as its first project. Again, C2000
and CAP-21 provided a bridge to “protect and preserve our heritage”
done until another organization took over the project permanently.
For more information about this project, visit the Town
of Webb Historical Association.
